Bio

Lt. Col. Edward Herbst Jr. (Ret.) passed away at his home on Oct. 11, 1994. He was born at Sweet Home, Texas, Sept. 6, 1920, to Edward Sr. and Frances Hermes Herbst. One Dec. 29, 1942, Edward married Irene Valenta. Edward is survived by Irene, four sons and a daughter; Henry S. and Barbara Herbst of Novi, Mich., Edward III and Loretta of Ennis, Gregory and Myrtle of Houston, Timothy and Molly of McKinney, Frances and Dr. Daniel Svyantek of Akron, Ohio, and 13 grandchildren. Brothers Msgr. Henry S. Herbst, B. J. Herbst and sister Mrs. Mary Gabrelcik, all of Sweet Home. He was preceded in death by son Irvin (Buddy) in 1949; and brother Anthony. Edward joined the Army in 1940 serving in the Corps of Engineers in both the North African Campaign and the European Theater during World War II. In his service to his country he spent over eight years in such foreign countries as Turkey, Germany, and the Marshall Islands. Edward retired with his family to New Braunfels in 1960. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Past Grand Knight of Council 4183 of the Knights of Columbus. Edward served as President of the Columbus Club and was instrumental in the renovation of the Council Hall. He was also a Life Member in the VFW Post 7110. Rosary to be held Thursday Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday Oct. 14, 1994, at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Sts.
