J.T. Masoner, 70, Mangum, a life-long resident of Greer County, died at the Mangum City Hospital on Tuesday of last week, following an illness of four months. Masoner was born in Brinkman on Nov. 23, 1906, the son of pioneer Brinkman settlers James Isaac and Maggie Jane Masoner. He attended school at Brinkman until his senior year when he transferred to Martha High School. He was a member of the 1926 Martha state champion basketball Team. He attended Southwestern State College and taught school at Reydon for two years. In the 1930s he farmed at Brinkman, and on April 2, 1942 he married Amenta Smith at Hobart. During World War II, Masoner served in the Pacific Theatre where he was a member of the 538th Amphibious Battalion. He was in on seven beach landings and received four medals, including the Bronze Star. After the war, he had a Studebaker and Dodge Agency in Mangum for 23 years. He also farmed and ranched in the Brinkman Community until his retirement in 1975. In 1961, with Albert Norton, he won the World Championship Domino Tournament. He is survived by his wife of the home; a son, Dr. Michael Masoner, Norman; a granddaughter, Collin; four sisters, Mrs. Jimmie Kutch, Hobart, Mrs. Hassie Geotzinger, Beaver, Mrs. Cleo Feaster, Norman, Mrs. Josephine DeBoard, Andrews, Tex.; a brother, Paul Wayne Masoner, Mangum. Funeral services were held last Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gordon Garlington officiating. Interment was in the Roselawn Cemetery.
