Civil War: 1st Independent Battery, Missouri State Militia Light Artillery, and Battery L, 2nd (New) Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery Samuel George Kinder was the son of Peter Kinder (1798-1872) and Jane Cain (1813-1845). During the Civil war he enlisted as a private at Harrisonville, Missouri, on March 29, 1862. He was mustered into 1st Independent Battery, Missouri State Militia Light Artillery, at Jefferson City, Missouri, on June 30, 1862. He re-enlisted at Sedalia, Missouri, on January 5, 1864, and was mustered into Battery L, 2nd (New) Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery, on January 25, 1864. He was promoted to corporal May 6, 1864. Corporal Kinder was mustered out at Benton Barracks, Missouri, November 20, 1865. After the war he married Phoebe A. Wade at Johnson, Missouri, on April 7, 1867. Samuel was a member of Canby Post, No. 48, Grand Army of the Republic. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Missouri on December 22, 1890, and received application No. 972,985 and certificate No. 801,368. After his death, Phoebe filed for a Civil War widow's pension in Jack County, Texas, on June 16, 1909, and received application No. 922,008.
