Bio

My grandfather, Ben Pate, was the son of John Pate & Catherine Mahala King. He had two older brothers...John Henry and William Lee pate, both of whom preceded him in death. His obituary follows: Ben D. Pate, 75, and early-day Artesian peace officer and carpenter, died at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning in a Carlsbad hospital. He became suddenly ill Tuesday morning and was taken to the hospital. His son John Pate, of Whittier, Calif., arrived Wednesday and is to leave today, accompanying the body of his father to Long Beach, Calif., where funeral services will be conducted Tuesday. Burial will be at Long Beach by the grave of Mrs. Pate. Ben Pate was born at Seguin, Texas, March 12, 1875. In 1890's he moved to Pecos, Texas, where he and Mrs. Pate were married. At Pecos Mr. Pate served as a peace officer. The family moved here in 1909 and Mr. Pate followed his trade as a carpenter and served as a peace officer until 1922. Over the years since, he had been back to Artesia several times for periods of a few months. Two months ago he came from California and visited here and at Carlsbad. Mr. Pate had planned to spend the winter in the valley. Surviving Mr. Pate are a daughter and son, Mrs. Callie Pate [Pruett] and John Pate, both of Whittier, Calif. [Callie lived at Stanton, CA], and seven grandchildren. Tom Heflin of Artesia is a nephew. ____________ OBITUARY: PATE - Ben Davis Pate, 75, of 2544 Chestnut Ave., died November 13th in Carlsbad, N.M. He was born in Seguin, Texas, and lived for several years in Artesia, N.M. He came to Long Beach in 1921. He was a retired Cattleman. He belonged to Artesia Lodge of Masons and the Modern Woodsmen of America in Artesia, N.M. He was a member of the Christian Church there. He belonged to the Chuck Wagon Trailer Club of New Mexico. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Callie Pruett, Stanton; son John B. Pate, Whittier; sister Mrs. Blanche Eager [Eagen], half-brother, George Kishbaugh, both of Hayden, Ariz. and seven grandchildren. Service will be Tuesday at 1 P.M. in Patterson Snively Chapel, Rev. Charles C. White of Stanton Community Church will officiate. Masonic service also will be conducted at the chapel and for internment in Sunnyside Memorial Park.
