Bio

July 1, 1953 - Carroll Daily Times - Burns suffered in an explosion at the city sewage disposal plant about 8 a.m. Tuesday resulted in the death of Joe Ferneding, 69, city employe, at 11:30 p.m. the same day at St. Anthony Hospital. Mr. Ferneding suffered fourth degree burns about the hands, arms and shoulders and second degree burns on other parts of the body. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the St. Lawrence Church, of which Mr. Ferneding was a member. The Rev. Arthur S. Poeckes will offer requiem mass. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. The body is resting at the Olerich Funeral Home, where the rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Ferneding moved to Carroll from Storm Lake four years ago. They resided in their home at 3228 North Court Street. Mr. Ferneding, son of Henry and Mary Ferneding, was born on a farm, near Templeton Dec. 31, 1883. He attended Sacred Heart School, Templeton. He was married to Margaret Becker May 31, 1911, at Gregory, S.D. Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Mrs Art (Loretta) Reinhart, Carroll; three grandchildren; two brothers, John Ferneding, Templeton, and Frank, Manning; and one sister, Anna Ferneding, Templeton. A son, Henry, died March 1, 1939. The explosion and fire which resulted in Mr. Ferneding's fatal burns occurred when he turned on the sewer pumps in the pumphouse on the disposal plant grounds, City Engineer Leo Clark said. Sewage gas apparently had been trapped during the night in the building, which has a basement, the city engineer stated. The explosion occurred when the electric motor was turned on to pump sewage to the sewage digester. Mr. Ferneding had worked for the city about two years.
