Bio

Mildred Marie (Garris) Couse, 90, of Republic, Wash., died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at Ferry County Memorial Hospital in Republic. Mildred was born Oct. 5, 1920, to Burton Garris and Bessie Hudson Garris in Miles City, Mont. In the fall of 1929, the family moved to Republic. She graduated from Republic High School in 1938 and following graduation she worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp as a cook's assistant. On Nov. 11, 1938, she married Dewayne Couse and continued to live in Republic. They lived in Arizona from 1946-1949 while Dewayne worked on construction. They returned to Republic, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Included in her travels were trips to England, Alaska, Florida, the East Coast, Mid West and "snowbird" trips south to Niland, Calif., after retiring. She was active as Room Mothers at school; in Blue Birds, Brownie Scouts, Cub Scouts and worked part time for (Rolfe and Lillian Tuve) the Republic News Miner. She continued working for the Grahams until her health limited her ability to do so… approximately 50 years. For many years, she delivered the Sunday Spokesman Review to rural Ferry County. She was a member of a local Square Dance Club. She volunteered for the Cancer Society, the Republic High School Scholarship Fund, Prospector's Day, Republic Chamber of Commerce, Eureka Arts, Ferry County Museum, and Ferry County Memorial Hospital. There, she created a beautiful garden for the enjoyment of the residents and staff. Her volunteering continued at Slab City in registrations and organizing float building and parades. She is remembered for her helping anyone who needed help. Mildred is survived by her children, Charlotte Koepke of Coos Bay, Ore., Peggy (Lanny) Batterman of Republic, Bob (Lynne) Couse of Damascus, Md., and Clifford (Shirley) Couse of Republic; 12 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Bud, Walter, Glenn and Stanley; and her sisters, Ava May Smith, Inez Garris and Ethel Copenhaver. Family graveside services were held on Friday, Sept. 02, 2011, at the Loomis Mountain View Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of choice. Bergh Funeral Service of Republic is in charge of arrangements.
