Bio
Laura L. Roberts was born July 5, 1875 in Arkansas, daughter of Ezra Roberts (1852-1935) and Neoma Lyles (1850-1920). The 1880 Federal Census for Marion, Missouri (Mercer County) shows Laura L. Roberts, age 4, born in Arkansas; living with her father, Ezra Roberts, age 29, born in Arkansas; and her mother, Neoma, age 29, born in Arkansas. Also living in the household was Laura's brother, Robert L. Roberts, age 2, born in Arkansas. Laura married Jacob M. 'Jake' Ellis, who was born January 28, 1871 in Arkansas. The 1900 Federal Census for Justice Precinct 3, Texas (Collin County) shows Laura L. Ellis, age 24, born July 1875 in Arkansas; and her husband, Jacob Ellis, a farmer, age 29, born January 1871 in Arkansas. Living with them were three children,Cecil A. Ellis, age 6, born October 1893 in Arkansas; Norman A. Ellis, age 5, born April 1895 in Arkansas; and Stella May Ellis, age 1, born May 1899 in Texas. The 1920 Federal Census for Calera, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Laura L. Ellis, age 44, born in Arkansas; and her husband, Jake M. Ellis, a farmer, age 47, born in Arkansas. Living with them were six children: Clarence L. Ellis, a farm laborer, age 17; Raymond C. Ellis, a farm laborer, age 15; Thelma L. Ellis, age 12; Oleta Ellis, age 9; Jacob M. Ellis Jr., age 7; and James W. Ellis, age 2 years 6 months; all born in Texas except the last child, James W. Ellis, who was born in Oklahoma. The 1940 Federal Census for Lubbock, Texas (Lubbock County) shows Laura Ellis, a widow, age 64, born in Arkansas; living with her son, James Wilson Ellis, a cotton oil mill laborer, age 22, born in Oklahoma; and his wife, Vyanna, age 19, born in Texas. They were living next door to Laura's daughter, Oleta Ellis Foster and her husband, Clyde Foster. Jacob died September 20, 1921 in Bryan County, Oklahoma and was buried in Durant in the Highland Cemetery. Laura died January 22, 1952 in Lubbock County, Texas and was buried in Durant, Oklahoma in the Highland Cemetery beside her husband.
