Columbian Progress Sept.1 1938 Mother Dies Baby Saved In Tragic Event Crushed beneath a deluge of pine stumps,Mrs.Alice Ruth Bedwell.20 years of age,of Darbun,died a sudden and tragic death last Thursday near Darbun. Mrs.Bedwell with her baby daughter was seated in the cab of a truck between A.H.McGuffie and his father .Her husband Irvin Bedwell was riding on top of the load stump wood. Just this side of Darbun,as they were enroute to Columbia,one of the truck tires blew out.The truck swerved into the ditch and the load of stump wood cascaded down upon the cab crushing it. Mrs.Bedwell was instantly killed,but her baby daughter was found on the floor of the cab beneath her unharmed.Aside from slight bruises and cuts,Mr.McGuffie,owner and driver of the truck,and his father escape injury.Mr.Bedwell was thrown from the truck and his right shoulder painfully hurt.He also suffered minor cuts and bruises according to reports. The truck caught fire and some negroes who were working nearby were called to assit in extinguishing the flames.The body of Mrs.Bedwell was brought to the Walden funeral Home here and Mr.Bedwell went by the hospital to have his injuries treated. Funeral services for Mrs.Bedwell were held from Walden's Chapel at 10;00 a.m. Saturday morning with Rev.F,K,Horton officiating. Interment was in City cemetery . Surviving the deceased are her husband and two year-old daughter, her father,Jim Rhoden of Bunker hill her mother,Mrs.May Caldwell of New Orleans,and her sister,Mrs.Covington of Shubuta,Miss Article submitted by Shirley Fortenberry Ramshur
