Beckett, Mary Elizabeth Downs Bio. The Downs were living in Virginia when Electious was born, they removed to the State of Maryland, then removed to Delaware Co. Ohio, and then emigrated to Shelby Co. Ridge Twp., Illinois. Electious Downs was born 13 Oct. 1803 in Virginia, he married Mary Ann Stiffler , born in Washington Co. MD. . Daniel the first child was born in 1827 in MD. Joseph (our Josiah ) also born in MD. and Sarah. Mary Ann, and James H. were born in Delaware Co. Ohio. In 1848 Elictious Downs was listed iin Public Domain Sales Land Tract Record for 40 acres In Shelby Co. IL. Mary Elizabeth Downs, daughter of Josiah and Rebecca Rhoades, (Rhodes), Downs , was the fifth of seven children, born to this couple, in 1861 in Christian County, Illinois. Josiah and Rebecca were married in 1852 and Lucy Ann Downs was born in March 1853. The children were Lucy Ann, Willliam Henry, Electious, Sarah , Mary Elizabeth, Nancy and Josiah Downs. Rebecca gave birth to Josiah Downs 04 April 1866, and he lived 3 month and 3 days, 07 July 1866, and is buried in the Henton Cemetery. Rebecca died 04 April 1866, Aged 32 Yr. 11 M. 13 Ds. She also is in the Henton Cemetery, Shelby Co. IL. Mary Elizabeth was only five years old. In the 1870 Census , Lucy Ann was listed as the house keeper for the family. Josiah married Rosella Huntington (two children) 27 Oct 1872 and they were parents of George, Minnie, Solomon, Etta, and Julia Downs. Lucy the eldest child of first marriage died in 1873. Mary Elizabeth Downs and John Beckett were married 28 Oct 1880. They made their home in Rural Twp. Shelby Co. IL. John was born in Sheling Thorpe, England, and came to Utica ,New York, United States with his parents as a child. The Beckett family moved from New York to Springfield , IL. and then settled in Rural Twp. Shelby Co. IL. John and Mary Elizabeth raised a family of four children, Dora Ann, Flora Elizabeth "Flo", William J. and Myrtle. John Beckett sold his land in Shelby Co. and moved to Colorado when Myrtle was a child. They did not stay long but retured to Shelby Co. and lived in Assumption, IL, after Myrtle was married. John Beckett died May 2, 1942 and Mary Elizabeth died August 8, 1950 and buried in Pleasant View Cemetery in Assumption, IL
