Bio

Quay B. Miller, 86, of Anahuac passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. Quay is preceded in death by his brother, Driscoll Miller , and great-grandson, Cooper Miller . He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Theresa Anna Cellucci Miller, whom he adored and whose loving care was invaluable; daughters Gloria Kolb and husband George, and Theresa Chapman; sons, Tony Miller and wife Karen, John Miller and wife Lisa; his 7 grandchildren: Gloria Solomon, Bobby Kolb, Stephanie Miller, Clayton Miller, Nicholas Miller, Tess Miller, and Kyle Miller; 6 great-grandchildren: Taylor Solomon, Gabriella Solomon, Kellen Solomon, Kye Solomon, Cayden Diebold and Cayleigh Miller and his sister-in-law, Enoise Miller. Miller, also known as Coach Buck, was born on December 29, 1924 in Wortham, Freestone County, Texas to Quay V. Miller and Tina White Miller. He served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific on the aircraft carrier Princeton. After serving his country, he attended the University of Houston on a football scholarship where he earned his Bachelor of Science in 1952 and his Masters Degree in Education in 1956. While at U of H, Miller was named Team Choice Lineman in 1948, Best All-Around Lineman in 1950-51, All-American in 1951, Most Outstanding Lineman, and Team Captain in 1952. Buck was also voted "Best Spirited" by his fellow Cougar teammates. Miller was a teacher and football coach for 38 years and retired in 1990 from Furr High School in Houston. Beyond all of his achievements on the football field as a player and coach, Buck was first and foremost an amazing man with a zest for life that was revealed by the twinkle in his eye and his genuine smile that would light up a room. He was an extremely loving and devoted husband and father who always made time for his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His sincere love of young people was apparent to everyone; he positively influenced and shaped countless young lives, always placing character above winning. Buck will be remembered with love and respect by all who knew him. The family wishes to thank Buck's caregiver, Angela Dargin, for her exceptional care and loving support, as well as the compassionate personnel of Odyssey Hospice. In lieu of customary remembrances, a contribution to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America may be made in his honor.
