Obituary from the Shreveport Times newspaper, Oct. 2, 1981, Friday, p. 10-A: SHREVEPORT – Services for Mr. James Jacob "J.J." Brister, 87, of Shreveport, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday October 3 at Rose-Neath Marshall St. Chapel. Rev. E.H. House, Pastor, and Rev. David Felder, retired Pastor, of the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, where Mr. Brister was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Centuries Memorial Park. He died at 8 a.m. Thursday October 1, 1981 at Schumpert Medical Center following a short illness. Mr. Brister, born in and a former resident of Vernon Parish, La., had lived in Shreveport since 1929. He was a Maintenance Superintendent of the Water Dept. of the City of Shreveport. Mr. Brister was initiated in the Masons May 17, 1928, in the Alco Lodge No. 416, passed Dec. 6, 1928 and was raised to Master Mason March 28, 1929. He transferred to N.H. Bray Lodge No. 208 in Slagle, La. and received his 25 year certificate July 23, 1971. At that time, N.H. McClamroch, Jr. was Grand Master of La. He applied dual membership into Fair Park Lodge No. 436 on July 3, 1973 and received a Demit from Bray Lodge Aug. 7, 1973. He was a member of the York Rite Bodies, Shreveport Chapter No. 10 R.A.M. Ascension Commandery No. 6 and was a member of the Shreveport Council No. 23 R. & S.M. Mr. Brister was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem Bethel Shrine No. 2, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 23, Magnolia Chapter No. 27, the El Karubah Temple and a member of the Hundred Million Dollar Club. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Pelican Club. Mr. Brister was a veteran of World War I. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Millie Scarber Brister of Shreveport; two brothers, Sam Brister and Joe Brister, of Leesville, La.; cousin, Roy Junior McDaniel of Orange, Tex. Pallbearers will be S.H. Higdon, Henry Williams, C.C. Taylor, Ronnie Carter, Glenn Jackson and Loret J. Ross. Honorary pallbearers: Dr. Joe E. Holoubek, Dr. Wallace Brown, Dr. Charles Schober and Dr. Robert L. Barrett.
