Joseph was born to James Madison Thomas and Maude Ann Boykin. Six known sons were born to this couple. Joseph spent most of his life working for various railroads until he retired. Joe married Ruth Beatrice Brashears in 1929. They had two children - Stella Ruth and Billy Wayne. He was drafted into the US Army for about 6 months where he was a truck driver. He was honorably discharged. He was 5 foot 9 1/2 inches with blues eyes and black hair. At some point before his relationship with his second wife, he had a relationship with Marjorie McCutchen. Out of this relationship, a daughter, Wanda, was born. It is not known whether he knew about this daughter. He married Johnnie Eugenia "Jean" Downey. (I have been told that they did not marry until Joe was close to retirement and that they married in Mexico.) Six children were born to this couple. Two daughters died as infants. Their children's names are Linda Jo, Johnnie, Shirley, Sharon, Yvonne, and Joseph Jr. Sometime after his retirement and moving to Del Rio, TX, Joe became the nighttime desk clerk at the Travel Lodge. He loved the Dallas Cowboys! He died of cancer.
