Bio

Hiram Jay was born in Purcell, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, on October 11, 1874, the son of James Jay and Hester Ann Smith. On April 11, 1904, he married in Bedford County to Ursula Bennett, daughter of Rev. John Bennett and Anna Catharine Sowers. They were the parents of 3 children: B. Gladys, James Kelly and Vera Grace Jay. Obituary for Hiram Jay from the Caroline Miller Sparks collection: "Hiram Jay died Tuesday, May 31, at his home, Clearville, R.D.1, following a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Irvin Tewell, of near Bedford, and Miss Vera Jay, of Everett: and one son Kelly, at home. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Pine Grove church and burial was in the church cemetery."
