William Curtis Phillips, 79, of the Sharon community, entered his heavenly home on December 22, 2016. Curtis was born to the late Lloyd Phillips and Zettie Mae Coley on April 30, 1937. He was an active deacon at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and rarely missed a chance to worship in the house of the Lord. Curtis was a strong man of God who was devoted to his faith, his family, and his church. He was a man who knew and walked with the Lord and it was evident to all who knew him. He had a powerful prayer life and a deep understanding of the Word of God. Curtis was a decorated member of the United States Army who received an honorable discharge due to physical disability. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Violet Phillips; his son, William “Bill” Phillips, Jr.; two brothers, Robert and Travis Phillips; two sisters, Betty Lou Phillips and Gladys Jenkins; one nephew, Shane Pugh; and one step-grandson, Billy William Horton. He is survived by his wife, Nelda Phillips; his sister Wilma Allen; his brother Henry Phillips; his daughters, Brenda Walters, Wanda Clark (Richard), Linda Lowe (Greg); his step-children Cindy Watkins (Termite), Henry Horton (Jan); Billy Horton (Lisa); grandchildren, Jessica Wade (Adam), Rebekah Clark, Mallory Coats (Chad), Jonathan Walters; step-grandchildren, Courtney Miller (Jason), Karis Baltzell (Seth), Bryan Horton, Eric Horton, Christiana Vick, Kaitlyn Vick, Lauren Horton, Lexy Solorzano, Lacy Horton; and 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mr. Curtis will be held at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Hwy 29, Ellisville, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, with a church service celebrating his life beginning at 1:00 p.m. Bro. Roy Crouch, Bro. Richard Clark and Bro. Adam Wade will officiate the service. His body will be laid to rest at Sunset Gardens in Laurel. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, prayers are warmly welcomed along with donations in Mr. Curtis’ memory to the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church missions fund. In the same way that Curtis ended every prayer, we choose to remember those words as he ends his life on this earth: “…and Lord, we will be careful to give you the praise! Amen.”
