Funeral services for Faye Skillern, 96, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Eastside United Pentecostal Church in Nacogdoches with Rev. Ennis Fuller and Rev. W.E. Fuller officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches. Mrs. Skillern went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 in Nacogdoches. She was born on September 24, 1920 in Etoile, Texas to David Vincent Patterson and Roxie Mae Stripling Patterson. She was the oldest of three children. In 1937, she married Fred D. Skillern, her husband for almost 60 years, and they had three children. Mrs. Skillern worked for 21 years for Nacogdoches ISD as a cafeteria worker and supervisor. She was a member of Eastside United Pentecostal Church for over 70 years and served as secretary for the church and ladies auxiliary leader for many, many years. She helped make peanut brittle for the church for over 35 years. Mrs. Skillern loved God, her family and her church. She enjoyed yard work, especially raking leaves and gardening. She was a wonderful “East Texas” cook and loved to cook for people. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed sewing and quilting. Every child, grandchild and great-grandchild has a quilt that is a work of love from her. She loved to help people and do things for others. Mrs. Skillern was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Skillern; parents, David Vincent and Roxie Patterson; and a sister, Cynthia Lee. She is survived by two daughters, Elwanda Stricklen and husband, Leon of Lufkin, and Gloria Tubbe and husband, Billy of Nacogdoches; son, Floyd Skillern and wife, Darla of Nacogdoches; eight grandchildren, Diane Porter and husband, Kevin, Jeana Scott and husband, Jeff, Jennifer Stevens and husband, Billy all of Lufkin, Kimberly Carmona and husband, Ruben of Nacogdoches, Clint Hill and wife, Mary-Clare of Frisco, Kellie Hill Galligan and husband, Brian of San Diego, California and Brenda and Lisa Tubbe of Houston. She also had eight great-grandchildren, Kyle Porter and wife, Lacey, Jason Porter, Joshua Scott , Avery and Blake Stevens of Lufkin, Isabela, Sofia and Alex Carmona of Nacogdoches, and Nathaniel and Savannah Hill of Frisco; and one great great-grandson, Gunner Porter of Lufkin. Pallbearers will be Billy Lee, David Lee, Joe Verhalen, John Mark Patterson, Garland Gray, and Damon Lee. Visitation will be held from 5:00PM – 7:00PM on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Laird Funeral Home.
