Mary Elizabeth Kirkpatrick was the daughter of Benjamin "Benji" Franklin Kirkpatrick and Elizabeth Mason. She was born in Ross County, Ohio in 1839 (note her Obit says Indiana but two older and two younger siblings were born in Ohio). The family moved from Ohio through Indiana and eventually settled in Iowa. There she married Jacob Marinus LaFoy in 1859, the son of Dennis LaFoy (Dejinis Lavooij). It was in Audubon, Iowa where she and Jacob would eventually have 10 children: George, Dennis (child death), Jacob C., Mary Ann, Charles, Edward, Tip, Erastus, Platoff, and a daughter who died around the age of 2 (name unknown). The family all worked the farm and eventually the boys purchased their own farms to work. It was in 1904 that 5 of the sons moved to Saskatchewan in search of better farmland and became pioneers. They settled in Gray, Milestone, and Truax. In 1906 Mary and Jacob soon followed and lived near Platoff in the Milestone area. Shortly after in 1908 Mary would pass. In 1910 Jacob also passed away in the home of his son Jacob C. located in Gray. Mary and Jacob rest together in Milestone Cemetery.
