Daniel was born in Penobscot, Maine in 1847 and was the 7th of eleven children. Like all of the children of David Straw, Daniel had the opportunity to have an excellent education. He attended Dartmouth College's school of Medicine and graduated in 1869. Like so many of his time, the lure of the frontier beckoned. He went to Wells, Minnesota which was a thriving railroad hub in the 1870s and became the town‘s first physician and Health Officer. It is not known how Florence Jane Watson met Daniel met. They were married on October 16, 1872 in Somerville, Massachusetts and moved to Wells, Minnesota. On July 19, 1891 Dr. Straw died of peritonitis as a result an injury from a carriage accident. His obituary outlined his many accomplishments in the community. "Hundreds of people from Wells and surrounding villages" came to his funeral service attended his funeral.
