Bio

Shirley Svec, 84, of Schuyler, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at the Alegent Health Memorial Hospital in Schuyler. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Mary's in Schuyler. Fr. Rheo Ofalsa will be the celebrant. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. rosary, at Kracl Funeral Chapel. It will continue from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at Kracl Funeral Chapel. Committal will be at Schuyler Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Colfax County Senior Center and Divine Mercy Parish. Lunch will be served in St. Mary's Fellowship Hall. Shirley was born Aug. 21, 1926, in Columbus, to Ross E. and Mabel (Abbott) Braithwait. She graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1944. On July 28, 1951, she married Emil J. Svec at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. She was a housewife and mother to three children, Renee, Ann and John. Shirley worked in the office of the Colfax County Assessor for over 25 years, retiring in 1998. Shirley is survived by two daughters, Renee Fletcher-Blum and her husband, Doug, and Ann and Larry Ladwig, all of Schuyler; one son, John and his wife, Deb Svec, of David City; two sisters, Linda Larson, of Osceola, and Connie (Robert) Thelen, of Stromsburg; sister-in-law, Geri Braithwait, of Schuyler; and brother-in-law, Art Brandt, of Lincoln. Shirley also is survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Emil J. Svec in 1991, brothers Delton and Ross Braithwait, sister, Phyllis Brandt and son-in-law Orville (Rocky) Fletcher.
