Bio

James Henry Penny was born December 21, 1897, in Nebraska, son of Charles M. Penny and Harriet Groat. In about 1921, he married Willa Grace Beasley, who was born October 25, 1901 in Oklahoma. The World War I Draft Registration Records show that James registered for the World War I draft on September 12, 1918 in Stillwater, Oklahoma (Payne County). He gave his birthdate as December 21, 1897, age 20, his home address as a rural route in Glencoe, Oklahoma (Payne County), and his closest relative as his father, Charles M. Penny of Glencoe, and he stated that he worked as a farmer for his father. The 1930 Federal Census for Coalgate, Oklahoma (Coal County) shows James, age 33, born in Nebraska, working as a railway agent, and his wife, Willia, age 27, born in Oklahoma. Living with them were three children, all born in Oklahoma: William C., age 8; James H., age 6; and Yolanda E., age 2. Their son, Paul Leslie, had not yet been born.
