Viola M. Karst, 72, of Idaho Falls, a homemaker and community volunteer, died Jan. 6, 1996, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center after a short illness with cancer. She was born Jan. 17, 1923, in Crete, Neb., to Benjamin and Helen Horky Shavlik, the youngest of three children. She attended parochial and public schools in Crete and graduated from Crete High School in 1940. In 1941 she completed a year of nurses' training at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln, Neb., and in 1945 she moved to Denver, where she worked in revenue accounting for Mountain States Telephone Co. On June 10, 1950, she married Gilbert L. Karst of Hill City, Kan., in the Catholic Cathedral in Denver. In 1951 they moved to Idaho Falls, where they have lived for the past 45 years. She was a devoted homemaker, choosing as her career to provide care and nurturing for her husband and children. A parishioner of Holy Rosary Church, she attended Mass regularly. Many hours were devoted to volunteer work serving family, church, community and country. Included were the Holy Rosary Alter Society, Catholic Women's Association, Sacred Heart Hospital, the annual Mistletoe Mart Christmas Festival, Cub Scouts, library volunteer at Longfellow Elementary, and 40-year member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Bonneville Unit 56. Her hobbies included gardening, bird watching, and traveling with her husband here and abroad. She enjoyed her four grandchildren as well as kids in the neighborhood, and always had time to listen to their stories. Survivors include her husband of Idaho Falls; a daughter, Kathryn Byron of Boise; three sons, Kurt Karst and Craig Karst, both of Idaho Falls, and Gary Karst of Denver, Colo.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. The family suggests memorials to Holy Rosary School Endowment Foundation, or the American Cancer Society. (Post Register 08 Jan 1996)
