Bio

Troy H. Shafer, 59, of St. Paul died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, in St. Paul. Troy was born Oct. 16, 1951, in Kearney to William R. and Ida E. (Philpot) Shafer. Survivors are: Phyllis Conway, his companion since 1994; daughter-in-law, Shanna Shafer; grandchildren, Kaya, Irie and Solomon Shafer, all of Lawrence, Kan,; brothers, Dean Shafer and his wife, Jan of Grand Island and Joe Shafer of Wellsville, Kan.; sisters, Bonnie Giron and her husband, Jim of Laughlin, Ariz., and Arvilla Hieb of Wellsville, Kan.; Godchild, William R. Leetch; his stepmother, Joyce Shafer of Alda; brother-in-law, Rick Hieb of Fort Calhoun; Phyllis's family, Tina and Alan Dush of St. Paul, their children, William and his wife, Krystine Jackson and Anthony Dush; and Tonya, Ron and Gage Devall of Grand Island a host of relatives and friends and Sam, his special dog. Troy was raised and attended schools in Alda and Mitchell. Troy was baptized and confirmed at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Mitchell. After his schooling, he entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 17, 1971. Troy received his discharge on Dec. 15, 1972. Troy worked for Diamond Engineering and Yellow Freight Lines. He was united in marriage to Barbara Connors in 1974 in Grand Island. The couple lived in Wood River, where he worked for Diamond Engineering. He moved to Alda where he was employed at GIA for 12 years. He then worked as a chef at Dowd's of Nebraska and Merrick Machine and Tool as a machinist. At the time of his death, he was employed at Rockhard 4x4 in St. Paul. Family was very special to Troy. He enjoyed hunting, horse races, and playing pool and poker. Troy was preceded in death by his parents and son, Nathan. Published in The Grand Island Independent on August 17, 2011
