ROBERT LEE - Charles Edwin Sims died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010. He was 91 years of age and a resident of San Angelo, Texas. Charles was born on Jan. 23, 1919, in Bronte, Texas, to Minnie Ethel and John Marshall Sims. Charles had four sisters, Bertie Evaline, Emma Florence, Ruby Dauline and Elna Marcell. There were two brothers, Ellis Harmon and R.W. (Dub). Charles attended public schools in Bronte, Texas, and in 1941, went to vocational school in Dallas, Texas, to study metalsmithing. World War II prompted a stint in the U.S. Navy and he utilized his metalsmithing skills to help build B24 bombers for our country. Charles was honorably discharged in June 1946, and returned to Bronte. In 1954, Charles married Thelma Olene Mauldin Snoddy and along with her two sons, Ronnie and Richard, relocated in Robert Lee, Texas. Following retirement in 1993, Charles and Olene lived in Houston, Boerne and finally San Angelo, Texas, until his death. He was a successful landowner and rancher, but his life was devoted to his family. Charles is survived by his wife, Olene; sons Ronald and spouse Bonnie and Richard and spouse Dana; and granddaughters Penne and spouse Clifton Gooch, Kelly Sims and Teri Bentley. There are three great-grandchildren, Blake and Troy Bentley and Alexandra Gooch. He is also survived by his sister, Elna and spouse R.C. White; nieces Kathryn and spouse David Gulley, Jonnie Pearl and spouse Tom Lutrell and Debra Lynn; nephews Sammy Doyle Sparks and D.W. (D. Dub) Sims; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Ethel Sims; father John Marshall Sims; sisters Bertie Evaline, Ruby Dauline Sparks and Emma Florence; brothers Ellis Harmon Sims and Dub Sims; and nephew Bobby Edwin Wrinkle. Visitation will be held all day Thursday, Oct. 7, and Friday, Oct. 8, at the funeral home. The family will be present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, with funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in Robert Lee, Texas. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Bronte, Texas. Pallbearers include his great-nephews with his nephews as honorary pallbearers. Military honor guard will be provided by Goodfellow Air Force Base. Services are under direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. A special thanks to his great-niece, Kristi Silvas for her love and care.
