Bio

Francis Joseph Bernard was born March 31, 1916, near Anthon, the eldest child of James and Josephine (Umhoeffer) Bernard. He was raised in the Anthon area and attended St. Joseph Catholic School, graduating from Anthon Public High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, for two years. He farmed on the family farm, until entering the Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center in March 1998. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and American Legion McNiff Post 389. He enjoyed gardening. Survivors include two sisters, Mildred M. (Mrs. David) Macken of Rochester, Minnesota, and Joan Barnes of Hot Springs, Arkansas; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Bernard of Anthon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.
