Grace was born July 9, 1919, to John Warren Abbott and Susan Elizabeth Hall Abbott. Grace, or Josie known to many, lived a full life for almost 101 years. Although she never really had any accolades to her name, her family loved, respected, and cherished her. She cared for not only her 2 daughters, but was also responsible for the upbringing of her grandchildren. She lived a humble, hard-working life in the Big Rock community near Eustace, Texas. Josie was not afraid of anyone or anything. She built her own home with the help of her father, worked on airplanes, and was an accomplished seamstress. You never really had to guess what was on Josie's mind, for she would let you know. She loved the Lord, reading books, and working jigsaw puzzles. Her family was her pride and joy, and she would stop at nothing to ensure their safety. Josie was the third child of the union of John and Susan, having an older brother Gene Abbott and a sister Edna Abbott Carter. When Susan died, Josie was just 2 years old. Her grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Hall Abbott, stepped in and became the caretaker for the family. Her father then remarried, Ada Abbott, and a son Melvin Abbott was born, completing the siblings of Josie. When Josie grew older, she married Wardo Hendley, and they had one daughter, Wanda Hendley McBride. Although this union wouldn't last, she then married Herman McLendon, and had another daughter, Gail McLendon Hall. Josie continued on in the Big Rock area until she was in her 80's when she decided to move closer to her oldest daughter. After residing in Wills Point area for several years, her oldest daughter passed away. She then moved to Grapeland to be with her other daughter. Unfortunately, her youngest daughter passed away, and she then came home to Wills Point and make her home at Crestwood Nursing Facility. Several months ago, Josie made her final move to her granddaughter's home in Edgewood where she would spend her remaining days. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, surrounded by family. Although Josie will be missed, her funny stories and her life legacy will be cherished forever with those that knew her best. We are all better people because we knew her. Josie is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Herman McLendon, her daughters, Wanda McBride and Gail Hall, brothers Melvin and Gene Abbott, sister Edna Carter, grandson Billy Rozelle, great granddaughter Courtney Howard, great-grandson Jason Wilson. She is survived by her grandsons Wayne Groom, Philip Groom, Keith McGuire, Brad McGuire, and Kevin McGuire. Granddaughters Linda Groom, Frankie Wilson, and Susan Tull. 25 great-grandchildren, 42 great-great grandchildren, and 3 great-great-great grandchildren. Special thanks to Crestwood Nursing Facility for the years of care given, and also Alinea Hospice with their wonderful staff that helped during this difficult time.
