The following provided by Find A Grave contributor "Cara" Great Falls Tribune (MT), 20 July 1921 Sheriff Is Killed By Fall Down Fort Benton Jail Steps Fort Benton, July 19--As the result of a fall down the steps at the jail, Sheriff Merritt Flanagan died at the hospital here at 3 o'clock this morning. He had been found unconscious at the bottom of the flight and never regained consciousness. A broken blood vessel and bruises of the head and chest brought about death. Mr. Flanagan had but recently recovered from a severe illness and had returned from the hospital. He occupied rooms over the jail and in some manner known to no one, fell down the steps. The deceased was about 58 years of age and leaves no relative in this city. He has two daughters living in Chinook and a brother at Missoula. Mr. Flanagan came to Montana more than 20 years ago and served in various official capacities for the past 10 years. In 1898 he was appointed customs inspector for the Havre district and served in that capacity for four years. He also served as city marshall of Fort Benton. He entered his second term as sheriff of this county the first of January. --- Great Falls Tribune (MT), 22 July 1921 Funeral of Sheriff Draws Large Cortege Fort Benton, July 21 The funeral of Merritt Flanagan, sheriff of Chouteau county, was held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Episcopal church, Rector Leacher officiating. Many friends and acquaintances were present and the funeral was one of the largest held here for some time.
