(Helen) Konz --------------------------------------- Columbus Nebraska "Telegram" Newspaper: David J. Eller, 56, died Wednesday evening as a result of injuries he received in a three-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 30 east of Columbus. The victim lived in rural Columbus. The collision occurred just before 6 p.m. at the intersection of East 29th Avenue and U.S. 30. Eller's vehicle was rear ended by a sport utility vehicle and semi-truck trailer. The SUV, a 2010 Ford Explorer, driven by Roger Gentrup of Albion, had been westbound on Highway 30 and was stopped at the stoplight at the intersection. The second vehicle, a semi-truck trailer, driven by John Abbate of Port St. Lucie, Fla., collided with the rear of the SUV while it was stopped at the intersection. The impact pushed the SUV into the rear of Eller's vehicle, which had just turned west onto the highway after traveling south on East 29th Avenue. Eller was pronounced dead at the scene. Gentrup was transported to the Columbus Community Hospital by Columbus Fire and Rescue where he was treated and released. Abbate was not injured. All were alone in their vehicles at the time of the crash. Preliminary investigation indicated Abbate and Gentrup were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, Eller was not. Columbus Fire and Rescue and the Nebraska State Patrol, along with the Platte County Sheriff's Office responded to the call. The collision remains under investigation by the Platte County Sheriff's Office and Nebraska State Patrol.
