REST IN PEACE.. BALLINGER — A Mass of Christian Burial for Ralph John Smetana Sr., 76, of Rowena, formerly of Westphalia, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery. Mr. Smetana died Thursday, Jan. 7, in a local hospital. He was born on April 10, 1933, to Emil and Josephine Schustek Smetana Sr. in Westphalia in Falls County. He moved to Paint Rock in Concho County in 1945 to farm in the Dry Hollow area with his parents. He attended Dry Hollow and Eola Schools. On May 6, 1952, he married Ellen Frances "Nancy" Kasberg in Rowena at St. Joseph Catholic Church. In 1995, he retired from farming and they moved to Rowena. Survivors include his wife of Rowena; five sons, Ralph Smetana Jr. of Sonora, Glenn Smetana and Wayne Smetana, both of Eola, Clyde Smetana of Veribest and Chris Smetana of Ingleside; three daughters; Debra Stewart of San Angelo, Cindy Carpenter of Paint Rock and E'Lisa Smetana of San Angelo; a sister, Gertrude Holubec of Eola; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Runnels County Senior Citizens Meals for the Elderly. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church in Rowena. Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger is in charge of arrangements.
