Rector T. "Rex" Billings, 79, of Bear Lake, Albion, a World War II Army veteran, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Whitley Memorial Hospital. The Freer, Texas, native retired in 1983 from Dial-X in Merriam, had worked at Merklers Machine Works in Fort Wayne as tool and die maker, member of Wolf Lake VFW Post 4717, American Legion Post 98, Second Indian Head Division Association and 40&8 in Churubusco. Surviving are his wife, Ruth I.; a son, Alan E. of Fort Wayne; daughters Gayle Rose of Littrell, Calif.; Marsha E. Capps of Fort Wayne and Dianne Ladig of Wolf Lake; a brother, Pat of Austin, Texas; sisters Dora M. Trainer of Coshocton, Ohio, Lora G. Hail of Camarillo, Calif., and June Polk of Johnson City, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian, a son, Melvin, three brothers and a sister. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne. Memorials are to Second Indian Head Association or Wolf Lake VFW Post 4717.
