Bio

WALTER JACK (W.J.) CRAWFORD, a resident of Houston for many years, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2005. He was the second of three sons of Andrew Jackson Crawford and Blanche Weatherred Crawford and was born on June 7, 1914, in Louisville, Mississippi. His father was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Louisville. In 1915 the family moved to Rossville, Kansas and then relocated to Athens, Texas in 1917. In 1925 they moved to Nacogdoches, Texas where Mr. Crawford's father became pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Water Jack (known by most as "Jack") graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1931 and later from Stephen F. Austin College (now Stephen F. Austin State University) in 1935. Following graduation from Stephen F. Austin, he spent a year as an assistant to the Controller and Professor of Accounting at Stephen F. Austin. This was followed by teaching fellowships at Texas A&M University and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Mr. Crawford received an MBA degree from Northwestern University in 1938 and became a Certified Public Accountant that same year. In 1941 he was married to Elisabeth Stripling, a doctor of medicine, whom he adored until his death. Jack and Elisabeth knew each other for years, having grown up next door to each other in Nacogdoches. He was employed by Arthur Andersen & Company in September of 1938, and served on their auditing staff for three years. Mr. Crawford then joined the Humble Oil & Refining Company, serving faithfully in the Controller's department. He was appointed as head of the Humble tax division in 1944 and continued in that position until his retirement from Exxon Corporation in 1974. Mr. Crawford was a long-time member of Lakeside Country Club in Houston, where he served as club president and established many long lasting friendships over the years.
