Allen "Swede" Erstrom, 85, of Vale, passed away at home, July 26, surrounded by his family. Memorial Services will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Vale, Monday, August 1 at 11:00 a.m., with Father Ron Maag officiating. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of Lienkaemper Chapel. Swede was born February 10, 1926 to Albin and Elsie Mae Erstrom in Bismark, North Dakota. He was the youngest and only boy in a family of five. In the early 1940's, his family settled in the Vale area where he attended Vale Union High School playing football, basketball, and track. He then joined the Armed Forces, serving on a Navy Submarine, The USS Blower (SS 325). Upon completion of his military service, he attended school at the College of Idaho where he played football. Swede married Mary Ann Syrovatka on Christmas Eve in 1947. Together they were blessed with three children. They made their home in the Sand Hollow area before moving to Willowcreek. Throughout the years, Swede did custom agricultural work. He established Erstrom Suffolks, and became one of the largest suppliers of breeding stock to commercial flocks in the Northwest. Swede served on the school board, Malheur County Fair Board, as a 4H club leader, and coached little league. Swede enjoyed all school sports, especially Vale Viking Football. He could always be seen running up and down the sidelines at every game. Swede is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; three children, Jerry and Pat (Rhonda), of Willowcreek, and Kathy (Tony), of Eagle, Idaho. Swede's eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren were his pride and joy. He is also survived by a sister, Marjorie Toven, and many nieces and nephews. Proceeding in death were his father and mother, and sisters, Betty Erstrom, Maxine Kelley and Vivian Sowa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Malheur County Fair.
