He was baptised in Denmark as "Boy Duike Marcus Carl Christian Carstensen" but was known as "Carl". When he was about nine his parents became Mormon converts and decided to emigrate to Utah but couldn't afford the fares for the whole family so first sent their two oldest sons along with missionaires named Jensen. Carl and his brother Chris probably spent their first months with a Mormon family but by 1887 their parents came with the two youngest children. Carl was a hard worker and by age 13 was working as a messenger. He married young and held a number of jobs over the next few years including a stint as a dance instructor. By 1912 he had joined Salt Lake City's police force. Many articles on his activities as a police officer over the next eleven years can be found in the Salt Lake Tribune. Salt Lake City Census Records: 1900 - Carl (age 23) + Hattie (age 21) + Cecil (age 1) -- they are renting a home at 604 Third West 1910 - Carl (age 32), Hattie (age 32), Cecil (age 12), Arvilla (age 9), Gertrude (age 7) and Carl (age 1) 1920 - Carl (age 42) Hattie (age 41) Arvella (18) Carl (11) Doretta (9) Frank (6) all living at 617 Bryan Street with son-in-law Ernie Sherwood & Cecil. (1920 Salt Lake City directory lists Carl C. Carstensen, Det. Police Dept.; residence at 1336 2nd East). Information from JoAnn Sherwood.
