Gottlieb was born at Bagnung, Germany in Swabene province. His father worked at making wine barrels. His mother's maiden name was Aufrect. Gottlieb came to the United States when he was 17 (1884) and went with an uncle on his mother's side to homestead at Venango, Nebraska. For several years he worked as a farm hand, farmed himself, and worked for the Northwestern Railroad as a section hand under John Gabel. Gottlieb married Louise Naegele on December 3, 1887. The two oldest children were born in Germany when they returned to spend Louise's inheritance money. The couple settled in the Garland area upon their return in 1890. They were the parents of at least 15 children. The oldest daughter, Sophie, left home at an early age and never met her younger siblings. Two sons died in infancy and son Louis died of appendicitis at the age of 10. The other children were: Elizabeth (Gallagher), Marie (Westerhoff), Bertha (Fuehring), Lida (Miller), Bill, Fred, George, Jake, Ben, Henry, and Carl. When the children would reach the age of 10 or 11, they would go to the homes of neighbors to live and work for their room and board and schooling. Around 1916, the couple moved to Seward to live in a house where the Hughes Brothers factory now stands. They lived there until their deaths.
