Civil War: Co. C, 5th California Infantry; Co. C, 1st California Veteran Infantry Archibald Elbert Caldwell enlisted as a private and was mustered into Company C, 5th California Infantry, at Sacramento November 30, 1861. Private Caldwell was promoted to corporal. He was mustered out at Mesilla, New Mexico Territory, November 30, 1864. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer at Mesilla December 1 and was mustered into Company C, 1st California Veteran Infantry, December 24, 1864. Corporal Caldwell was mustered out with his company at Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, September 17, 1866 (Orton, pp. 394, 687). After the war he eventually settled in Idaho, where he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension September 15, 1891, and received application No. 964,527. He was a member of Phil Sheridan Post, No. 4, Boise, Idaho, Grand Army of the Republic. Biography by Steve
