Helen Viola Baldwin, longtime Magic Valley resident, passed away Monday, June 27, 2011, in Great Bend, Kan. Helen was born at home near Ansley, Neb., on Sept. 11, 1922. She was the third child of Fred and Anna (Mattox) Niedt and grew up on a farm in the Ansley area. After graduating from Dry Valley High School, Helen moved to California and studied "Precision Inspection" in order to work in the airplane construction industry during World War II. While working at the Vega Aircraft factory on B-17 planes as an original "Rosie the Riveter," Helen met co-worker, Leon Baldwin, and they later married on April 26, 1943. Leon was drafted into the Army Air Corps during World War II, leaving Helen alone to raise their first child, Dee Anne, while he was away. After Leon returned from military service, they moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where they farmed for several years, and son, Fred, was born. They bought a farm in the Hunt project north of Eden in 1957 and farmed there until Leon's death in 1971. Helen moved with her two younger daughters, Nona and Marcia, from the farm to Hazelton and later to Twin Falls. She retired from Tupperware Corporation in 1984. In 2004, Helen sold her home in Twin Falls and moved to Great Bend, Kan., to live next door to her daughter, Dee Anne. She attended Central Baptist Church in Great Bend. Survivors include her son, Fred (Debbie) Baldwin of Redmond, Ore., daughters, Dee Anne (John) Grummon of Great Bend, Kan., Nona (Dan) Ritchie of Meridian, Idaho, and Marcia Baldwin (Gary) Leegate of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Leon; her parents; her brother, Estie Niedt; and sister, Nola Farmer. A graveside inurnment ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at the Hazelton Cemetery. Farmer Funeral Chapel in Buhl is in charge of arrangements.
