News-Register, McMinnville, Oregon, Tuesday, April 2, 2002 Private family services will be held for longtime Sheridan resident Kathryn Leona Stern Shaffer. Mrs. Shaffer died March 29, 2002, in Oakwood Country Place, McMinnville. She was 88. She was born Dec. 5, 1913, in Brantford, N.D., the daughter of Dorsey Daniel and Bessie Ida Richter Burns. She graduated from Bordulac High School in Bordulac, N.D. She attended nurse training at Bethney College in Chicago. She later worked as a nurse in Weiser, Idaho, and Tonasket, Wash. She and George Harold Stern were married July 31, 1940, in Tonasket. She lived in Tonasket until her husband's death in 1950, then moved to College Place, Wash. She and George Albert Shaffer were married April 2, 1955, in College Place. After marrying, she lived on Drift Creek, near Culter City. The couple moved to Sheridan in the early 1960s. Mrs. Shaffer worked as a nurse in Sheridan Care Center until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening and crocheting. Survivors include a son, Charles Stern of Sheridan; a stepson, Donald Shaffer of Lincoln City; a stepdaughter, Doris Gurr of Redding, Calif.; a brother, Duane Burns of Myrtle Creek; a sister, Lorraine Nelson of Troy, Idaho; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her second husband in 1994; a daughter, Leah Stern in 1996; and a sister, Doris Carlson in 2001.
