Columbus Journal, January 17, 1894 & Osceola Record, January 11, 1894 QUERY--Rev. James Query died at Osceola, January 5. He was among the very oldest settlers in the county, having been there since 1868. He was the first preacher located in the county, also the first county judge of Polk county. The Record says: "he had the respect, esteem and love of all who knew him without an exception." He was the first county Judge of Polk county and held the office for two years. Father Query's life was not a success in a financial sense. He leaves no vast estate. Neither did he gain for himself a world wide reputation. But in another sense his life was a decided success. He had the respect esteem and love of all who knew him without exception. His life was one of kindness and helpfulness to all with whom he came in contact. He did much to give Polk county its high moral and religious tone in its early days. He was the first to raise the Banner of the Cross on Polk county soil, and marching under its folds to help blaze the path of civilization. He deserves much more credit than he will ever get here. The funeral services were held in the new M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. B. Whitmer. The funeral was certainly the largest ever held in Osceola and probably the largest in the county. Every seat was occupied and fully fifty standing. The text was taken from Father Query's favorite Psalm, the 51st and a part of verse 10. His widow and children have the heartfelt sympathy of all who were acquainted with Father Query. James Query was born in Rush county, Ohio, Jan. 29, 1821, and at his death was aged 72 years 11 months and 7 days. At the age of 5 years he moved to Jasper county, Ind. where he was married to Miss Osce Record Sept., 17, 1845. Shortly after his marriage he moved to northern Indiana where he remained until he moved to Polk county. To him and his life partner were born three sons and five daughters all of whom are still living.
