From the Bryan-College Station (TX) Eagle , Tuesday, July 15, 2008: April 25, 1922 - July 13, 2008 Herbert J. West, 86, of College Station, Texas was born on April 25, 1922 and passed away on July 13, 2008. Services are set for 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1515 S. College Avenue, Bryan, Texas 77801. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. prior to the service. His body will be laid to rest in the College Station Cemetery near the gravesite of his mother, Albina and his grandparents, Frantiska and Jan Borucka, who immigrated to America in the mid-1800s. He will be remembered fondly for the tremendous love and influence he had on his family. Through his example, he taught his children to respect all people, to work hard, and to enjoy life on this good earth. Herbert died peacefully in the comfort of his home with his wife, Alva Barker West, by his bedside holding his hand. They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage together on July 29, 2008. He was the second of four sons born to Herbert Dewitt West and Albina Boriskie West in San Angelo, Texas. Herbert mourned the death of his dear brother, Wayne G. West, who died in 1993, and more recently the death of his sister-in-law, Helen West. We pray that he is now reunited with these loved ones and others who have entered into eternal life. He grew up in College Station, Texas and graduated from A & M Consolidated High School in 1940. As a young man, he proudly served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He was assigned to the Corps of Engineers where he served as a Battalion Sergeant Major. He survived combat fire while fighting on the European front. Following the war, he returned to Texas where he and his wife, Alva, built their life together in Houston, Texas. He went into the plumbing trade and was an active member of the Plumbers Local Union for 60 years. In 1959, he and Alva began their weekend journeys to the small farming community of Peach Creek near College Station to raise cattle and care for the old family homestead that had been left to Alva by her father, James S. Barker . It was through their work on this farm that Herbert taught his three children many lessons of living a responsible, productive and happy life. He is survived by his devoted children and their spouses: the eldest, Glenn E. West and his wife, Marty, who were also by his side at the time of his death; the middle son, Mark J. West and his wife, Janet; and his daughter, Cynthia W. Conte and her husband, Dr. Robert Conte. He also leaves behind his two brothers, Hawley West of Kurten, Texas and Bill West of Horseshoe Bay, Texas along with four grandsons, three great-granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember their Uncle Herb. He will be dearly missed by Melissa Trevino, who became his constant care provider and friend during these past several years. Thanks to her devoted attention, he was watched over, loved, and cared for. Six very special men have walked beside Herbert West at various stages in his life, sharing memorable times with him. We are honored that Oscar Harrison, Richard Severa, Jimmy Barker, Chet Barker, Larry West and Arthur Reed will be by his side as pallbearers on this last journey. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends consider a donation to the South Brazos County Fire Department, P. O. Box 501, Millican, Texas 77866. Herbert always admired the dedication of these emergency responders who serve this very special 501(c)3 charitable organization. It is difficult for his family to let him go, but they find comfort in knowing that God has called him home after giving him a long and happy life here on earth. We shall remember, "The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not protect you."
