Parents: Wilson Lafayette and Susan Nash Stallard Spouse: Iloe Read Stallard Burchell L. 'Slew' Stallard 24 Nov 1917 20 Apr 2000 Wise, VA - Burchell L. 'Slew' Stallard, 82, passed away peacefully Thursday April 20, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital in Norton, VA He was a lifelong resident of Wise County having graduated from Coeburn High School, where he played on four championship football teams. He played football at the University of Virginia and at Milligan College, where he played on three championship teams; the last year he was captain. He also ran track for three years and was captain his senior year. He received both a B. S. and B. A. from Milligan College, M. A. in school administration from Vanderbilt/Peabody and did post graduate work at UVA and Oxford. He was inducted into the Milligan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. He was a great avid Alabama football fan. Mr. Stallard served in World War II in the Ninth Air Force, 442nd Troop Carrier Group, part of C-47 Skytrain. He presented the American Flag to the mayor of St. Andre', France during Liberation ceremonies. He was in Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Stallard began his teaching/coaching career at Grundy High School. He was assistant football coach at TPI (with his former high school and college coach} Star Wood. He returned to Big Stone High School, where he coached and taught, was the first Powell Valley Viking coach, was coach/teacher at Coeburn High School, principal at Coeburn Elementary and was the first Wise County School System Supervisor of Purchasing and Maintenance. On his retirement, he returned to his farm, where he raised hay and enjoyed following the sport that he loved during his career. Mr. Stallard was a Southern Baptist, a former treasurer of Nash's Chapel and attended the Appalachia First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, W. L. and Susan Nash Stallard; and a sister, Mildred S. Couch. Surviving are his wife, Iloe Read Stallard, Wise, VA; one sister, Evelyn Smith, Wise VA; three nephews, Larry Smith, Gary Smith and Ray Couch and one great-niece, all of Wise, VA. Burial was in the Nash Cemetery on Coeburn Mountain Road in Wise, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to be made to the Iloe and Burchell Stallard Scholarship Fund, UVA-Wise Foundation, Office of Development, 1 College Ave., Wise, VA 24293.
