Barbara Ruth Pipes Funeral for Barbara Ruth Pipes, 83, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Terry Marsh officiating. Mrs. Pipes died Monday, June 13, 2011, in a Lawton hospital. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service. She was born Jan. 25, 1928, in Duncan, to George L. and Blanche (Morris) Hutchins. She lived in Walters and moved to Lawton as a young girl. She was a 1946 graduate of Lawton High School and while in school was a champion tennis player and was state runner-up two years. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1951 with a degree in physical education. She married John H. Pipes on August 11, 1947, in Vernon, Texas. They were married for 64 years. Mrs. Pipes had many interests. She earned her pilot's license at the age of 14 and was a member of Rainbow and Campfire Girls when she was a girl. She was later active in the Junior Service League of Lawton and also served two terms on the Lawton City Council from 1976 until 1980. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school. After her children were grown, she worked as a real estate broker with John Erwin Realty and was the primary developer of Pecan Creek West Estates which enabled her and her husband to build their dream home. She loved her life in the country. She enjoyed bird watching, gardening and family gatherings. She is survived by her husband, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Rob Gragg, Norman; a son, Kevin Pipes, Norman; a daughter-in-law, Linda Pipes, Edmond; three grandchildren: Adam Pipes, Jeremy Pipes and Turner Pipes; and a sister, Jan Ewbank, Seattle.
