Bio

Mrs. Susan Cain Haley, aged 93 years, one of Pendleton County’s oldest and highly respected Christian women, passed away peacefully at the home of her son, Mark Haley, with whom she lived, near McKinneysburg, on Friday morning, Feb. 21, 1947, following an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Mariah Johnson Cain and was born in Highland County, Ohio, not far from the little town of Millersburg, on March 28, 1853. She was one of a family of eight children, and surviving in her parental family is one brother, Mathias Wagner Cain, of Claysville. Mrs. Haley came to Kentucky with her parents when she was a child. In her youth, she united with the Claysville Christian Church and remained faithful to that church until the end. Mrs. Haley was twice married. On Aug. 25, 1881, she was married to John F. Leathers, and no children were born to this union, he passing on several months later. On Jan. 1, 1884, she married Thomas Porter Haley, who preceded her in death about 11 years ago. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive. She leaves behind her son and three daughters, Mrs. Clarence Adams, of Danville, Mrs. Clarence Bravard, of Bethel, Ohio, and Mrs. Fannie Holmes, of Pendleton County. She also leaves two step-children, Joe Tom Haley and Mrs. Mollie Workman, both of Robertson County, 27 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Vernon Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 23, at 2 o’clock, conducted by her lifelong friend, Rev. W. M. Lenox. Burial took place in the churchyard cemetery. Thomas & Fossett were in charge. The casket bearers were Leonard Workman, Carl Bravard, Meredith Bravard, Bentley Haley, Hook Haley and Quinten Haley. Flower bearers were Carrie Haley, Melba Haley, Mable Haley, Alberta Lucas, Fay Whitson, Florence Bravard, Hallie Hart, Vivian Holmes and Naomi Workman.
