John A. Sanderson, 91, of Central City died Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Long Term Care in Central City. John was born on March 8, 1920, near Marquette to Alfred and Amanda (Anderson) Sanderson. John was united in marriage to Mary J. Kuhn in 1956. Survivors are: wife, Mary Sanderson of Central City; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Russ Mace of Central City; sisters, Selma Thomsen and Algene Hopkins, both of Omaha and Dorothy Retzlaff of Arcadia, Calif. John received his education at Hamilton County Schools and then worked with his father on the family farm. In 1941, John went to Buffalo, N.Y., to work with Curtis-Wright Aircraft Company and in 1942, he entered the U.S. Army. John served in the Philippines and New Guinea; and flew 46 missions serving as top turret gunner. He was honorably discharged on July 2, 1945. John returned to Nebraska and he and his brother, Kenneth, operated a service station for several years in Omaha. John returned to live in Central City and he, Kenneth, and Harold owned and operated Sanderson Brothers Construction. John retired from construction in the late 1980's. Johm was a member of the American Legion Post Six in Central City and he enjoyed fishing, reading and dogs. John's greatest love was for his family and his work. John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl, Leonard, Rueben, Harold, Albert and Kenneth Sanderson; sisters, Christine Bunch, Anna McIntosh and Carrie Lindbloom; one foster sister and one foster brother. Burial was in The Mamre Evangelical Church Cemetery near Marquette, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on 6/15/2011
