Times dated 1992-12-2: FRANK AVRIL JOHNSON Funeral services for long-time Gainesville businessman, Frank Avril Johnson, 84, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Clinkingbeard Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gene Bates officiating and burial in Lutie Cemetery at Theodosia. Mr. Johnson died at 12:22 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, in St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield. He was born Oct. 30, 1908, in Dugginsville, the son of John C. and Bessie (Futrell) Johnson. He and his brothers, Marvin and Fred, grew up working at their father's general store, cotton gin and farm. In 1926, their father bought a store in Hammond. The three brothers moved there to operate the store. In 1932, Marvin and Frank moved to Theodosia and operated a general store and mill there. In 1937, the two brothers, moved to Gainesville and bought the Max Harlin Store and called it Johnson Brothers and put in general store. The store, still in operation on the Gainsville Square, is now known as Johnson's Store. Mr. Johnson became the postmaster in Gainesville in 1945 and retired in 1978 and moved to a farm near Thornfield. He married Jessie Mahan on March 11, 1928, at the Shiloh School, the site where they later built a house and lived from 1978 to 1991 when they moved to Springfield. Of him, his family says, "Frank spent his life in Ozark County working with people in his business and the post office. He loved his country and the Christian Church, where he was an elder for many years". "His special love was for his family and fellow man, as was always evident in his smile for everyone. "He was a kind, gentle, Christian man". Mr. Johnson is survived by two sons, Rex, and wife, Frances Johnson of Gainesville and Bob Johnson of Springfield; three grandchildren, Teresa and Dan Hicks and Erick and Lisa Johnson of Springfield; a great grandson, Matthew Johnson Hicks, Springfield; a brother, Glenna Johnson, Ava; and a sister, Clara Sallee, Gainesville. Pallbearers were Mack Johnson, Eugene Johnson, Roy Johnson, Eric Johnson, Dan Hicks and H. K. Sallee. Honorary pallbearers were Kelly Sallee, Judson Luna, Howard Senften, H.T. Harlin, Heyden Carter and Harry Redus. Memorials may be made to the building fund of the First Christian Church of Gainesville.
