Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent Tuesday, 23 July 1918 "Union Pacific Train Strikes Automobile Party" Osceola, Neb., July 23 - Verner Roberts and A. W. Hahn, two Polk county farmers, were killed at Gardner sidetrack of the Union Pacific this afternoon at 1:20 o'clock. They were driving an automobile and when attempting to cross the railroad were struck by train No. 5. The car was demolished and both were killed instantly. The bodies were taken to Columbus. By throwing his little baby from the automobile Mr. Roberts saved its life. Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Hahn were driving another automobile and were only a short distance in advance when the accident happened. The Roberts baby is reported to be badly hurt. The car was practically demolished. Theodore P. Boehm, of this city, was on the second section of No. 5 which followed the first section within a few minutes... The little babe was just being taken away when the second section of the train stopped at the scene. It is stated that the view of the track was obstructed from one point along which the car must have passed, by a row of medium sized trees...
