Death's Shadow Verdon Verdette, Mar 24, 1899 Death has claimed another of our pioneer citizens. James Hargus Stewart died at his home in Verdon on last Monday evening, Mar 20, 1899 at 7:35 o'clock. The deceased was born in the state of IL on Feb 10, 1839, and was sixty years, one-month and ten days old. From IL he moved with his parents, when a small boy, to Polk co, IA, where on the 16th of Dec, 1859, he was married to Miss Mary Foutch. They moved to Richardson co, in 1865, and settled on the Nemaha near Salem. After living there one year, they left Ne and returned to IA. In 1869, they returned to NE and settled on the farm now known as the Voils farm. He had since made this state his home. Mr. Stewart's death was not unexpected as he has been quite low for several weeks. Death was caused by a cancer. He was a prominent member of the A.O.U.W. Lodge at this place, and the senior member of the firm J.H. Stewart and Son, proprietors of the Red Livery barn at this place. He was the eldest of a family of nine, six boys and three girls, one a brother , of whom had preceeded him over the river of death. He leaves a wife, two sons, and a granddaughter to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. The funeral services were held at the Evangelical church and were conducted by Rev. Isaacs, after which the remains were interred in the Verdon cemetery. The many friends of the family and relatives of the deceased all extend sympathy in this sad hour.
