SARGENT [Matagorda County, Texas] --Melvin Forrest Merritt, 68, of Sargent, died Saturday, June 26, 1999. He was born March 3, 1931, in Sargent, to Velma Socha Merritt Clements of Sargent and the late Samuel Merritt. He was a retired pipefitter for Cardinal Construction in Freeport. He was a charter member of Sargent Lion's Club and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Survivors: wife, Agnes Hanna Merritt; daughter, Velma Smith of Van Vleck; son, Melvin Merritt of Wichita Falls; sisters, Shirley Hooter of Bayou Vista and Orealia Klingingberg of Angleton; brother, Custer Clements Jr.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: son, Samuel Merritt. Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Sargent, the Rev. Joe Ramsey officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.
