Laban Oakes was the son of James Oakes and his mother is unknown. The Oakes lived in Pittsylvania Co, Virginia where they owned property. Laban had brothers, Hesikiah, Josiah, and James. Laban Oakes married Susannah McKenney in Halifax Co, Virginia in 1793. It is unclear of the date of Laban's death. He was not listed in the census of 1800 and 1810 due to lost records.
