Oneta Willard Young March 14, 1915 - March 15, 2011. Oneta Willard Young, formerly of Shafter and Bakersfield, died Tuesday, March 15, in Grand Junction, Colorado, of Alzheimer's at the age of 96. Oneta was born March 14, 1915, in Anna, Texas, the eighth of ten children born to Claude and Dovie Willard. She attended schools in Anna and graduated in the class of 1933. On September 2, 1933, she married Otto "Red" Young in Anna, and the couple began sharecrop farming in the area. After seven years, the depression put them on Highway 66 to California and the hope of a better life. Like many other migrant laborers, they followed the crops and lived in the labor camps. They eventually settled in Shafter, California, where they continued to work in the cotton and potato fields and the sheds. Eventually, Oneta accepted her first indoor job at the Richland School cafeteria. After the children were grown, the couple moved to Bakersfield, and she began a long association with Hodel's Buffet. She remained there until her retirement at age 75. It was then she had time for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was devoted to them and in return adored by them. Her presence was sorely missed when Alzheimer's overtook her in her late 80's. Her husband, Otto, her two sons-in-law, parents, and all of her siblings preceded Oneta in death. She is survived by her son Charles Young (Clarice) of St. George, UT, her daughters Donna Hallenbeck of Santa Barbara, CA, and Glenda Altenhofen of Grand Junction, CO. Seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren also survive her. Oneta was a member of the First Southern Baptist in Shafter and later, a member of Stine Road Baptist Church in Bakersfield. She had an unshakable faith in God, simple and direct. She was a true giver, expecting nothing in return. Hers was a long life, well lived, recognized and appreciated by all who knew her. A graveside service will be held for Oneta at 10:30 on Tuesday April 26th at the Shafter Cemetery. www.bakersfield.com/obits Published in Bakersfield Californian on April 22, 2011.
