Bio

1838 About 1838 - 1840, Devereaux Goodale married Arathusia Childs in the state of New York. She was born about 1816. Other trees give her birthplace as Barre, Washington, Vermont, United States, but the 1850 census record has New York as her birthplace. Other trees give her parents as Parker Childs and Betsey Boutwell. 1840 1840 United States Federal Census in Denmark, Lewis, New York, United States lists Devereau Goodale as the head of household with 1 male and 1 female 20-29 years old. 1843 The death certificate of Edward Goodale gives his birth date and place as 26 August 1843 in Illinois, which is consistent with other records for him, including the 1850 census record below. However, the death certificate has his father as Edward instead of Devereaux (informant error), but does give Childs as his mother's maiden name. Place names of Illinois by Edward Callary Page 144 GRANT. Lake. Township. Originally called Goodale for innkeeper Devereaux Goodale. Goodale had promised to donate a meeting hall for the township government but failed to do so, and in 1867 the name was changed to Grant in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, then becoming a prominent figure in the Republican Party (Dretske What's in a Name?; Past and Present of Lake County, 286). The Grant post office was active from March 4, 1862, until July 22, 1925. He is in California/Nevada/Utah at least beginning by 1850 until his death. Lake County is in the northeast corner of Illinois. Goodale Township, now Grant Township is on the western side of the county, north of Wauconda Township, which is the location given on the 1850 census below. Note that Devereaux is also in California as a gold miner that year. My best guess from the evidence is that she died 18 September 1851, probably in Goodale Township, near Wauconda, Lake, Illinois, United States. No records are found for her after the 1850 census above. Edward is with his father or other relatives after this. Devereaux is married to a second wife in 1854.
