Bio

John R. Vandiver, 81, passed away Friday, April 15, 2011. Service: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Euless. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Moore Funeral Home. John was born July 20, 1929, to Elbert and Mae Vandiver in Hunt County. He graduated from Lingleville High School and attended Tarleton State University before serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1949-1952 in the Korean War. In his early years, he worked for John Deere Tractor Company in Stephenville. John was an active member of First Baptist Church, Euless. He enjoyed being part of the Streamline Royal Rovers Travel Club where he served as secretary-treasurer and director. He was also a member of the Raytheon Retirees Club and the SW Bell retirees. While his grandchildren were attending school, he was a member of the H.E.B. ISD PTA. He was a former supervisor at Raytheon (formerly Texas Instruments). John enjoyed travelling extensively in the U.S. and Canada in his RV, doing service projects for family and friends, remodeling churches and working sudoku puzzles. He was the "go-to-guy" and "handyman." He spent much of his life in quiet service and gave of himself with no expectation and no show. He spread the message of Christ in the best way he knew: through kindness and compassion and through the gift of his time and energy. He was a great man of a generation of great men. There won't be another like him and that's all our loss. John was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Mae Vandiver. Survivors: wife of 59 years, Peggy Latta Vandiver; daughter, Anniece McKanna; granddaughters, Alyssa McKanna and LeAnne McKanna; sisters, Leona Goodman, Audrey Burdett and husband, Fred, and Tabitha McClellan; numerous extended family and friends; former associates at LTV, TI and Raytheon.
