DONALDINE S. AVEY July 19, 1915 - January 26, 2012 Donaldine Lewis Avey, 96, died at the Valley County Hospital in Ord, Nebraska on January 26, 2012. Donaldine was born Dorothea Sara Theresa on July 19, 1915 to Gladys Benjamin Bishop and David Bishop in Roundup, Montana. Her childhood years were spent in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado, and a short stay in California. At the age of 13, she lost her mother and was adopted by David and Elizabeth Lewis near Liscott, Nebraska. She graduated from Broken Bow High School and was a country school teacher for three years. On April 4, 1936, she united in marriage to Cecil Avey. They started their lives together near Dunning in a railroad car-body house with a turkey operation and a big garden. Two children were born during this time, Elizabeth and Mildred. They moved to Seneca in 1939 where Helen, Lola, David, and Virginia were born. In 1957, the family moved to Crawford where Donaldine worked at the Quick Serve Grocery until retirement. Donaldine was a master gardener and self-taught seamstress. While living in Seneca she kept her family fed with the large test plot she gardened and charted for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her sewing sills seemed unlimited. They ranged from flour sack dresses and shirts, formals, majorette/cheerleading uniforms, cowboy and cameo outfits to pillows and blankets for her children and grandchildren. Don and Cec (as they were known), "retired" to a beautiful 3-acre garden that could be viewed entering Crawford. There was plenty of produce to share, and share they did. In the summer of 2010 Don over saw her last garden while her family and Jean Daugherty carefully followed her instructions. She moved to the Grandview Assisted Living facility in Ord in the fall of 2010. Donaldine was preceded in death by her husband, infant daughter Mildred, her parents and adopted parents, brother David Bishop, Sister Mary Wagner, and son-in-law Herman Liermann. Her survivors include five children, Elizabeth (TJ) Poole of Arvada, Colorado, Helen (Ken) Cullers of Ord, Nebraska, Lola Liermann of Sgt. Bluff, Iowa, David (Connie Zarek) Avey of Casper, Wyoming, and Virginia (Richard) Pullen of Lusk, Wyoming. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Additional survivors include many nieces, nephews, and special nephew, Loren Avey and his wife Connie of Grand Island, Cousin Harry Watts of Wales, England, sister-in-law Lola Avey Brown of Tacoma, Washington and a dear friend Helen Britton of Torrington, Wyoming. Donaldine gave her time, wisdom, and patience to anyone who wanted or needed it. If she was a part of your life, you were better for it. She leaves behind innumerable, appreciative friends and family. Thursday February 2, 2012, 11:00 AM at United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Crawford Cemetery.
